Christmas is near and it is the time when people are beginning to feel generous and charitable. A lot of money, food and clothing are being donated during this time. There are many charities on-line and in real life that are aimed to help the needy. One particular website, however, is aimed to help both parties of the giving process: the poor and the philanthropists.
www.freerice.com is a sister site of www.poverty.com (that website where they show you the pictures of kids who are dying of hunger every hour). Free Rice tests your knowledge of the English language while feeding the poor at the same time. The extensive vocabulary database is broken down into 50 levels of difficulty. Every time you get a word right, 20 grains for rice are donated to the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) that distibutes the food among the needy. Every three correct answers lead to an upgrade of the level. “It is rare for people to get above level 48,” states the website.
I urge everyone to visit this website at least once a week. Not only because it’s educational (great for SAT pactice), but also because it helps a good cause.
